We loved this table when we saw it in photos and were excited to have it delivered, though ultimately decided it wasn’t the right fit for us. In the photos, we thought the base looked almost metallic and the paint contrasts were really striking, especially given their sheen. Our one major fear was the 36″ diameter of the glass top which is a little on the larger side for a coffee table, putting it on the level of some smaller dining/kitchen tables.
When it arrived, the first thing we noticed was the base itself was way less brilliant in person. While we knew the base was ceramic (“Earthenware” as stated on the West Elm website), in person you could really tell and it looked more like a large ceramic vase than a sophisticated coffee table base. There were also some blemishes in the paint, and to top it all off the base was hollow and therefore incredibly lightweight which we were surprised at for the price tag.
The glass top unfortunately did feel too big for our purposes, though maybe it would have been ok in a larger living room setting near at least a 72″+ couch (ours was small at just over 60″). The glass, like most West Elm glass we’ve seen, appeared relatively low quality though was thick. We estimate it would scratch fairly easily compared to higher end glass. Considering the weight of the top vs. the weight of the bottom, we also felt a tipping accident was a possibility in the presence of lively pets or children, though for most purposes it would be stable enough given the wide bottom of the base.
This was definitely one of those “we wish it worked out but it simply didn’t” coffee tables, though we still love it in photos!
The good news is, it’s frequently on sale at around $279 which is what we paid, and at that price the value isn’t all that bad.
