The Urban Sectional from West Elm comes in a variety of sizes and styles including a “build your own” option, from 2 piece chaise sectionals to L-shaped 3 pieces and even a sleeper sectional with a storage compartment in the chaise seat. Additionally, it comes in a variety of fabric options, though we recommend caution when buying custom items on West Elm as there are one too many horror stories in terms of delivery time.
The Urban Sectional has a little more style to it than it’s highly similar relative the Henry sectional thanks to its lower back and more rectangular seat cushions, but unfortunately, here we’ve displaced comfort for style which in a sofa is not typically something we want to see. Because the back is lower you get a lot less support when sitting back into the sofa. Additionally, the back cushions are incredibly squishy and so contribute to this lack of support even further. This combined with the deep seat cushions makes for a pretty uncomfortable experience.
The sofa we reviewed had a twill fabric that we didn’t like as it felt abrasive, so we’d recommend going with a softer fabric even though we’re sure the twill would hold up really well and stayed quite taut on the couch and cushions. Build-wise this is a West Elm “Contract Grade” item and it does seem solid and well built. We don’t anticipate any issues there, though we did not get to review the sleeper sofa and would want to know both how that’s installed and what mattress it’s using.
This is probably a really nice sofa to fall asleep on, but outside of that we don’t think it competes well due to its lack of stability (we made that word up).
At $599-$5,996 with the 2 piece chase coming in at $2,398-$3,598 we think it’s way too expensive for what it is.
