The Origami Coffee Table from West Elm comes in two sizes, a medium and large. In photos it’s a very sophisticated looking table, made from a metal frame which forms a series of pentagons and triangles, and a tiled top which resembles marble from afar but looks more like tile or maybe blocks of ivory up close.
The medium table at 28″ diameter is probably better suited to be called a small table than a medium one, and as such fits nicely in tighter spaces, in front of smaller couches, or even as an end/side table as it also boasts the same 18″ height as the large. Unfortunately, due to this height and lack of width, the medium table suffers greatly from stability issues as we noticed it wobbles considerably. The large is not only wider but also lower to the ground, affording it more stability, though because the base still thins down towards the bottom it’s far from perfect in this department.
The construction is simple but poor. A very light weight frame screwed into the table top with some very small screws, we anticipate this does contribute to the stability problems and will only get worse with wear as the screws loosen and begin to strip a little.
While we haven’t had any issues with the tiles, we’ve heard they’re liable to simply come unglued which speaks to further poor craftsmanship, though probably is not a difficult problem to fix.
It is a pretty table in person, but not quite beautiful. It looks a bit cheaply made, likely because it is. The design is lovely, but using lower quality materials and sacrificing functionality is a big no no in our book, especially at the $399 & $499 prices this table retails for.
