The Mid Century Mini Desk is a West Elm sleeper, trust me. This unassuming little desk packs a lot of quality into a small space, and frankly caught me off guard as it’s soooo common desks in this size category are riddled with quality issues.
First off, it obviously looks great. Classic mid century style, matching the rest of their mid century line. It also happens to come in a white and a funky teal color they dub “Oregano” which is unique for the mid century line.
The first thing I wanted to do once I had it built was shake it a bunch to prove how wobbly it would be. Zero wobble. Zero. Wobble. It’s a sturdy little desk. On top of that, the legs are constructed well enough with what looks like biscuit joints and glue, and the design is obviously physically conducive towards stability. They are screwed into the desk portion — not abnormal though not ideal — but given the structure of the legs and the small size I’m not worried about it ever having issues breaking down.
Like other items in the line it’s important to note the cornered edges which frame the front of the desk can be prone to chipping, so try not to smash anything against them. They should be fine assuming they avoid… you know… smashing.
The drawers open smoothly, the finish is clean looking. The height is functional. Thanks to the small size it works well in a variety of rooms and spaces. It’s obviously never going to be a desk suited for a large screen but for laptop work or any writing or drawing it’s a great little nook.
At $399 we think this is a solid buy and you might catch it for 20-40% off depending on the color.
