This is our favorite of the mid-century “cabinet” line, which includes the cabinets, bar cabinet, and buffets. The entire line is build simply and sturdily, but the buffet happens to be a real eye catcher, especially in person.
What we like about the build in the buffet as is the same in the rest of the line is the sturdy x-frame bracing which attaches the legs and runs under the cabinet structure. The x-frame is jointed & glued in, and though it’s screwed into the cabinet itself, because of the sheer stability the x-frame provides we doubt you’ll run into any screw loosening issues any time soon.
As is the same with the rest of the line, the wood is beautiful but definitely scratches more easily than we’d like. Additionally, like the rest of the line, the cornered edges lining the front are prone to chipping. For this reason the buffet particularly suffers as a true buffet will see a lot of action, and we recommend a cloth covering of some sort when it’s in use as well as your best attempt at not knocking hard objects against the edges. Of course, the buffet works equally as well as a large cabinet and we wouldn’t worry about stationary items sitting on top.
The drawers can be a little clumsy at times but generally speaking open and close smoothly. If you don’t mind a project, we’d recommend looking into upgrading to a soft close drawer hinge, but they function perfectly fine as is. Aesthetically we think the drawers are what adds that extra style “oomph” that makes us so attracted to this piece in particular. From a build quality perspective, the drawers are a technical weak point as they’re veneer but you can’t tell by just looking and we’re not worried about them holding up at all.
The bronze finished hardware may be prone to chipping/scratching over time but we haven’t had any issues and assume anything that does happen can be easily fixed (or might even look cool).
At $999 base price it’s not exactly a cheap piece, but the value is there.
