The Mid-Century bar car has been our favorite West Elm bar cart if for nothing else the pure stability it provides from it’s better-than-the-others build quality. This is a bar cart you actually could roll across a carpet without having to make sure you’ve tightened the screws first, whereas most West Elm bar carts get very rickety very quickly.
There is only one set of wheels which perhaps adds to the stability but considering the build is just better we think it would have done fine on four wheels and been more practical. As is, you need to gently lift and roll the cart, which can be a nuisance if you have any fragile glassware or other at-risk items. However, the brass finished guard rails will probably be of some help in case of any potential disaster.
The wood seems less prone to scratching than the rest of the West Elm mid-century line. This may be due to a difference in finish as the bar cart comes in a water based Walnut or Dark Mineral finish instead of the usual Acorn finish. Maybe scratches just don’t show as easily.
This cart is also wider than most other West Elm offerings and slightly higher than some making it more practical though not quite high enough to mix drinks on.
Stylistically it is far less dainty than most other bar cart offerings from West Elm and has a little more “whiskey and cigar” appeal to it which we like but may not be for everyone. It definitely doesn’t have any serious pizazz to it has a thing. Regardless of aesthetic preference, this would be our #1 West Elm bar cart pick and might be the only one we’ve seen we think is actually worth the price tag at $299.
